  • CHASSYs are separate from university awards. Nominating someone for one does not prevent nomination for the other.

Faculty Awards

  • Who can nominate: Department heads (with additional materials gathered from colleagues and nominees as specified per award).
  • Who can be nominated: Tenured, tenure-track, and professional-track faculty (eligibility may vary slightly by award — see details below).
  • How to nominate: See nomination details for each award below.

Research, Scholarship, and Creativity Award

This award recognizes excellence in research, scholarship, and/or creative work in the humanities and social sciences. Tenured, tenure track, and professional-track faculty are eligible.

Nomination process

Department heads will provide:

  1. A departmental letter of nomination explaining the significance of the nominee’s scholarship in the context of the department or discipline
  2. A letter from a colleague, either in the department or from outside the department, explaining the significance of the nominee’s scholarship
  3. A short (no more than three pages) statement from the nominee explaining their scholarship
  4. A complete CV.

Community Impact Award

This award recognizes outstanding extension and community engagement activities by faculty. Tenured, tenure-track, and professional-track faculty are eligible.

Nomination Process

Department heads will provide:

  1. A departmental letter explaining the nature and value of the community work in which the nominee is engaged.
  2. A letter from a colleague or community partner, either inside or outside NC State, explaining the significance of the nominee’s work.
  3. A short (no more than three pages) statement from the nominee explaining their community work.
  4. A summary CV (no more than 5 pages) highlighting community-engaged scholarship.

Outstanding Professional Faculty Teaching Award

This award recognizes outstanding teaching and impact on students by professional-track faculty. Eligible nominees must have worked at NC State for at least three years, part-time or full-time (including the current semester).

Nomination Process

Department heads will provide:

  1. A departmental letter of recommendation.
  2. A summary CV (no more than 5 pages, focusing on contributions to undergraduate teaching, mentoring, course creation, etc.).
  3. A one-page statement of teaching philosophy.
  4. Two letters of reference from current or past students.

Outstanding Undergraduate Mentor Award

This award recognizes the critical role faculty mentors play in supporting undergraduate intellectual, personal, and professional success and in cultivating inclusive learning experiences inside and outside the classroom.

Nomination Process

Department heads will provide:

  1. A departmental letter of recommendation.
  2. A summary CV (no more than 5 pages, focusing on contributions to mentoring).
  3. A one-page statement of mentoring philosophy.
  4. Two letters of reference from current or past students.

International Research and Collaboration Award

This award recognizes outstanding international research and collaboration by college faculty. Tenured, tenure-track, and professional-track faculty are eligible.

Nomination Process

Department heads will provide:

  1. A 1–2 page departmental letter of recommendation.
  2. A 1–2 page letter from a colleague or collaborator (inside or outside NC State) explaining the significance of the nominee’s scholarship.
  3. A short (no more than three pages) statement from the nominee explaining their international scholarship.
  4. A complete CV.

Outstanding Junior Faculty (Humanities / Social Sciences)

Two awards are given annually — one for the humanities and one for the social sciences. Each department may submit only one nominee, specifying the category. This award recognizes an assistant professor judged to have the most significant professional accomplishments during their early career at NC State.

Nomination Process

Department heads will provide:

  1. A departmental nomination letter focusing on research significance (journal quality, awards, teaching innovations, etc.) and including a comparison of the nominee’s teaching load to departmental averages.
  2. A 2–3 page statement from the nominee detailing research, teaching, and service accomplishments.
  3. A complete CV.

Faculty Colleague Mentoring Award

This award recognizes senior faculty who have shown exceptional commitment to mentoring junior colleagues (tenure-track, professional track, or mid-career). Two awards may be given each year: one for professional track faculty and one for tenure/tenure-track faculty.

Nomination Process

Department heads will provide:

  1. A two-page letter describing why the nominee is worthy of the award, including examples of their impact on mentees’ careers, support for underrepresented faculty, and contributions to professional development.

Staff Awards

  • Who can nominate: Any CHASS faculty, staff, or administrator.
  • Who can be nominated: All active staff members (SHRA, temporary, EHRA non-faculty — excluding executive administrators and department heads).
  • How to nominate: Submit a Staff Nomination Form with a 200–500 word description highlighting the nominee’s contributions and achievements relevant to the specific award.

Impact Award

Recognizes staff members whose exceptional expertise has significantly advanced the college’s strategic priorities through innovative solutions and impactful work.

Rookie of the Year

Honors a new staff member who has made a substantial impact within their first 12–18 months at the college, demonstrating initiative and adaptability.

Spirit Award

Acknowledges staff members who exemplify the college’s core values and culture charter through positive attitude, collegiality, and teamwork.

Mentoring Award

Recognizes staff members who provide outstanding mentorship and support to colleagues, fostering professional growth and community.

Professional Development Award

Celebrates staff who demonstrate a strong commitment to personal and professional growth, actively seeking development opportunities and applying new skills.
