REU Stipend Payments

The National Science Foundation's Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program supports active research participation by undergraduate students in any of the areas of research funded by the federal agency.

REU projects involve students in meaningful ways in ongoing research programs or in research projects specifically designed for the REU program. Undergraduate students must be U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, or permanent U.S. residents.

REU participants must complete Responsible Conduct for Research (RCR) training before any payments can begin.

A stipend payment is distinct from a wage or salary because it does not necessarily represent payment for work performed, instead it represents a payment that enables someone to participate in a specific research project.
