Meet attorney and @ncstate philosophy alum Jeff Kelly. 🐺

As an emerging technology and complex litigation attorney, Jeff helps innovators and investors bring new ideas to life. This includes counseling clients on transactions and partnerships, guiding them on regulatory risks, and assisting with technical issues in ongoing lawsuits.

Jeff says he sees philosophy as an equal partner with law.

“If you can distill and engage in a reasoned debate on issues ranging from contemporary ethics to the paradoxes of time travel, you can probably evaluate proposed laws and help your clients understand their implications, too.”

🆙 and at ‘em.

Raise awareness and ignite positive change. That’s the goal of Connect@ Corp, a cultural proficiency training company founded by @ncstatespia alumna Lorena Patterson (pictured, far left).

Lorena started Connect@ in 2021 “to raise people’s awareness and empathy toward other people and cultures that differ from their own.”

Using skills gained through the Master of Public Administration program, Lorena helps individuals and businesses gain cultural proficiency when engaging, recruiting, retaining and serving people from Latin American countries. 🌎

Cloudy with a chance of red and white. ☁️
She’s a docent, researcher, storyteller, full-time student and an intern. Though @ncstate public history graduate student Sarah Waugh juggles many responsibilities, they all center on one goal: to tell the histories of marginalized people in the South.

Her recent work includes:

🔴 Examining the lives of enslaved and freed Black people in the 19th century as a docent at the Burwell School Historic Site, a school for girls from 1837 to 1857, in Hillsborough, North Carolina.

🔴 Digitizing oral histories of southern African Americans during the Jim Crow era while interning with the Behind the Veil Collection at Duke University Libraries.

🔴 Researching bilingual education for Spanish speakers in the North Carolina Migrant Education Program from the 1970s to the 1990s.

Meet Baiyina Muhammad, a 2022 graduate of @ncstate’s M.A. in liberal studies (MALS) program. As founder of the N.C. Black Disabilities Network, Baiyina aims to amplify the voices and experiences of Black people with disabilities in North Carolina.

Through her studies, Baiyina organized the network’s inaugural conference, where members of the academic community, state and local governments, educators, social service agencies and others came together to discuss the spectrum of disability issues and develop new strategies for eliminating barriers.

Poet Ina Cariño, who earned their Master of Fine Arts in creative writing from NC State in 2019, is one of only 10 recipients of a 2022 Whiting Award. 🏆 The award is one of the largest and most prestigious awards given to emerging writers in the United States. It recognizes early-career achievement and the promise of great work to come. #thinkanddo #ncstate
