Sharing Data with External Colleagues Using Google Workspace

Securely sharing data with external colleagues has always been challenging, both at NC State and among our partner institutions. But the university’s adoption of Google Workspace (Google Documents, Google Drive, and the like) has made sharing much easier. You can share files with colleagues at other institutions as detailed at this website. These tools will make it easier to share data with research collaborators.

Of course, data security is a paramount concern. Google Workspace can be used to store Highly Sensitive (red) data but not Ultra-Sensitive (purple) data. To see the different levels of data security and the appropriate storage locations, see this document. For more information about the Data Management Framework visit the following web page: https://oit.ncsu.edu/it-security/data-framework/. Also, any data involving human subjects must be secured as provided for in your IRB-approved protocol.

If you have any questions, please contact the research office or CHASS IT.
