“Textbook Scientists” Lab

The TSL, which I run with Dr. Patsy Sibley (Women’s and Gender Studies, NCSU) and undergraduates from NCSU’s WISE living-learning village, studies the portrayal of race and gender in science textbooks used at NCSU.

Extension and Community Engagement

WISE Sci-Fi Reading Group

Our reading group, now in its second year, meets monthly to examine the ways in which science fiction can help us understand the world around us. This interdisciplinary reading group focuses on developing students’ close reading skills and helping students draw connections between literature and society. Recent texts include Octavia Butler’s “Blood Child,” C.J. Cherryh’s “Cassandra,” and Samuel Delaney’s “Aye, and Gomorrah…”
