Bio

Joann Keyton (Ph.D., The Ohio State University, 1987) is Distinguished Professor of Communication at North Carolina State University. In addition to publications in scholarly journals and edited collections, she has published three textbooks for courses in group communicationresearch methods, and organizational culture in addition to co-editing an organizational communication case book. Keyton was editor of the Journal of Applied Communication Research, Volumes 31-33, and the founding editor of Communication Currents, Volumes 1-5. Currently, she is Editor of Small Group Research. She is a founder of the Interdisciplinary Network for Group Research.

Projects

Her current research examines the communication dynamics and relational aspects of teams and groups, the role of training and influence of culture in organizational interventions, and how messages are manipulated in sexual harassment.

Currently, Keyton is working on research funded by the Laboratory for Analytic Science. The goals of this stream of research are to: examine how individuals make inferences individually and collaboratively, and track the inference process from discussion to text production. In accomplishing these goals, Keyton is using new technologies to track  (and code) web searches and capture images of web searches. Additionally, she is working with engineers and computer scientists to use Kinects for capturing group interaction and to improve automatic transcription of group speech.

Keyton is Editor of Small Group Research, and Associate Editor of the  International Encyclopedia of Organizational Communication.
