Michael Pflanzer
Bio
Michael is the Group Coordinator for the NeuroComputational Ethics Research Group (NCERG). He is a PhD candidate at NCSU in the Communications, Rhetoric, and Digital Media program. He hopes to examine science literacy and the public perception of the credibility of science in his research. He is interested in learning how to effectively communicate science to laypeople and how to teach scientists to communicate their research effectively. He is a former U.S. Navy nuclear operator and, before joining the group, earned a BS in Psychology, a BS in Neuroscience, and an MA in Bioethics, Tech Ethics, and Science Policy. Michael is the managing editor of the American Journal of Bioethics: Neuroscience. He is working on various NCERG projects, including those that examine the morality of traffic decisions, the ethics of artificial intelligence, and the regulation of brain-related medical devices. Furthermore, he is a research assistant and web page manager for the Centering AI on Society and Ethics Initiative at NC State. His dissertation work will examine the benefits and potential consequences of generative AI in academic publishing, especially as it pertains to non-Anglophone and marginalized scholars.

Area(s) of Expertise
I specialize in the ethics of AI, particularly large-language models (LLMS). I am especially interested in the ways in which LLMs will either challenge or reinforce societal challenges (e.g., linguistic, racial, or other demographic biases). I also research the ethics of autonomous vehicles. Additionally, I have written a chapter in two different books relating to FDA perspectives on neurological interventions (one for transcranial magnetic stimulation and one for brain computer interfaces.)
