Bio:
Maura Nsonwu, Ph.D., MSW, LCSW is a professor of Social Work at North Carolina State University. She has practiced as a clinician, educator, and researcher in refugee resettlement, human trafficking, health care, child welfare, and social work education over 30 years. Maura has received external funding and produced numerous publications in these areas of inquiry which often intersect with one another. She has recently co-authored the textbook “Human Trafficking: Applying Research, Theory and Case” released in 2018. She is a research fellow with the Center for New North Carolinians (CNNC) at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro serving refugee/immigrant communities as an advocate/scholar. In this work, she has partnered closely with resettlement agencies as well as the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). Maura also serves as the president of the Association for Immigration and Refugee Service Professionals (ARSP), a national organization to support professionals who work in immigration and refugee-related fields and those they serve. Maura specializes in qualitative research often conducting community-based participatory research (CBPR) with refugee and immigrant communities (African, Montagnard and Latino). One of her CBPR grant-funded projects delivered culturally relevant mental health services to the local Latino community. Many CBPR projects include interdisciplinary collaboration with a variety of faculty and students from other disciplines and universities. Her work with the Interprofessional Health Education program partnered undergraduate and graduate level social work students with nursing, physician assistant, physical therapy, and pharmacy disciplines to cultivate collaborative healthcare practice to better serve patient-centered care. Maura has enjoyed serving in a number of administrative positions throughout her career. However, her real joy is teaching (and learning from) her students; she has been fortunate to work with undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral students.
