Bio

Mina Kaneko is Assistant Professor of modern Japanese literature and culture in the Department of World Languages and Cultures at North Carolina State University. She holds a PhD in Comparative Studies in Literature and Culture from the University of Southern California and she was formerly Associate Editor of Covers at The New Yorker magazine. Her current research project, titled “Radiating Mushrooms of Postwar Japan,” examines the figure of the mushroom across postwar Japanese art, manga, anime, and film as a key visual symbol for grappling with nuclear war. Her research has been funded by numerous awards, including the Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Abroad Research Fellowship. Prior to NC State University, she taught at Oberlin College.
