Bio

Isaac L. Woods Jr., Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology at North Carolina State University and a school psychologist. His research focuses on school mental health, psychological assessment, recruiting HBCU students into school psychology graduate programs, culturally responsive psychological practice, and the academic, behavioral, social, and emotional development of Black children and adolescents.

His scholarship examines psychological assessment, school climate, student development, school-based mental health services, and factors that influence the recruitment and preparation of school psychologists. His research has been published in journals including School Psychology Review, School Psychology International, Contemporary School Psychology, School Psychology Quarterly, Psychological Assessment, and Cultural Diversity & Ethnic Minority Psychology.

Dr. Woods has served as Principal Investigator on externally funded projects examining psychological test selection, recruitment into school mental-health professions, and collaborative school-community mental-health services.

Dr. Woods’ current research examines:

  • Psychoeducational assessment of Black children
  • Culturally responsive assessment and clinical judgment
  • School climate and student development
  • Cultural assets to aid in academic, behavioral, social, and emotional development
  • Recruitment and preparation of school psychologists from underrepresented backgrounds
  • School-community mental health partnerships

Graduate Advising

Dr. Woods mentors graduate and undergraduate students interested in his research lab: Psychoeducational Evaluation, Assessment, and Collaboration for Equity (PEACE).

Students working with Dr. Woods engage in research design, data collection and analysis, manuscript development, conference presentations, and research dissemination.

Responsibilities

Dr. Woods teaches courses in the School Psychology program, including Seminar in School Psychology, Supporting the Success of Diverse Students for School Psychologists, and Psychopathology and Mental Health.

He also serves as Faculty Advisor for the Black Psychology Club.
