Bio

Teaching and Research Interests

I am interested in the sociology of work and organizations, economic sociology, and the sociology of crime, law, and social control. I am interested in many different research methods, including using corpus-sized text data, participant observation and ethnography, and traditional statistical methods to address questions in many areas of sociology. My main interests are corporate and occupational crime. I teach classes on the Sociology of Organizations, Social Deviance, Criminology, and Social Theory.

Projects

First, in my dissertation I am using interview methods to investigate the ways that managers and employees at retail/restaurant businesses negotiate paid and unpaid labor.

Second, I am investigating the effects of franchise organizations on civic engagement and spatial inequality in rural communities.

Extension and Community Engagement

I had the wonderful opportunity to teach Dialect Awareness to 8th graders in Ocracoke, NC. I hope to continue work doing so in other parts of NC during Spring Break.
