Revealing a Different Side of President Carter

In her new book, Jimmy Carter in Africa: Race and the Cold War, NC State Professor of History Nancy Mitchell draws on her research to reveal a side of the president few have seen. The American Academy of Diplomacy selected the book for its 2016 Douglas Dillon Award, a prestigious honor given to the best book about the process of diplomacy.

Mapping the Life, Work of Lebanese-American Business Owners

NC State's Khayrallah Center for Lebanese Diaspora Studies recently launched the first phase of Mapping the Mahjar, a digital humanities project that recounts the history of Lebanese immigrants around the world. Through an interactive visual display, the first phase tells the story of business owners who were part of the initial wave of the Lebanese diaspora in the United States.

Student’s Startup Helps Teens Tap into Creative Gifts

Over the last four years, Nate Myers has trained high school students in photography, videography and music production at the Boys and Girls Club of Wake County afterschool program. Working with teens largely from low-income households, Myers mentored students through multimedia projects with themes often promoting social change. Now, through his startup — the Malkuta Project — Myers is expanding the afterschool model to the broader community.

English Professor Named Frederick Burkhardt Fellow

English professor James Mulholland has been named a 2016 recipient of the American Council of Learned Societies Frederick Burkhardt Residential Fellowship. Mulholland, an associate professor of 18th-century British poetry and Anglo-Indian literature, will spend the 2016-17 academic year in residency at the National Humanities Center in Durham. There, he’ll focus on an ongoing book project documenting the rich and unique literary culture of 18th-century British India.

Harding, vice chancellor and president of Australia’s James Cook University, chairs the State of the Tropics, a first-of-its-kind partnership with 12 research institutions around the globe.
