About Us
We study human thought and action to learn, create knowledge and solve complex problems.
Who We Are
Our college is home to critical thinkers and doers. We use interdisciplinary learning to bring unique perspectives and skills to industries around the world — and close to home.
Our diverse degree programs help students become skilled communicators who know how to ask questions, listen and reason. Our alumni lead the charge on solving global problems. And our faculty are devoted educators and highly sought after thought leaders.
We’re a proud member of an NC State community that’s widely recognized for science, technology, engineering and math. We strongly support advancing STEM skills. We also know that they alone can’t address the grand challenges of our time. The humanities and social sciences are essential to equipping communities with knowledge that not only solves problems, but also leads to productive and satisfying lives.
Our Academic Offerings
With more than 4,500 students, our college is the second largest on NC State’s campus and is home to 10 academic units:
- Communication
- English
- History
- Interdisciplinary Studies
- Philosophy and Religious Studies
- Psychology
- Public and International Affairs
- Social Work
- Sociology and Anthropology
- World Languages and Cultures
We offer a wide range of degree programs, with more than 55 undergraduate majors, more than 40 undergraduate minors, 12 master’s degrees and five doctoral degrees.
Outside the classroom, our students learn by doing. They apply their knowledge — and learn new skills — through study abroad, internships and undergraduate research. And they take on leadership roles through student government, student media and other organizations on campus.
Our students go on to work in a variety of fields. They’re judges and journalists, actors and archivists, chefs and clinical psychologists. Pick any profession, and there’s a good chance our alumni are leading the way.
Research and Engagement
Our scholars and researchers work with colleagues across the academic spectrum — from engineers and scientists to veterinarians and statisticians. They create new knowledge and extend their expertise to inform and support communities. And regardless of their unique interests, they’re united in their mission to provide answers, solutions and value to citizens across North Carolina and beyond.
We also support three community-oriented centers. We work with nonprofit, government and community partners to make a tangible impact, from exploring immigration through the Khayrallah Center for Lebanese Diaspora Studies to applying academic research to community problems at the Center for Family and Community Engagement.
