Professional Licensure

Our professional licensure programs prepare undergraduates for content-specific K-12 teaching positions in North Carolina schools. Teaching careers in these areas require subject matter mastery as well as the ability to communicate that information effectively to students.

Humanities and Social Sciences professional education licensure programs are approved by the North Carolina State Board of Education through the N.C. Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) and are accredited by the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). We will prepare you to teach with sound content knowledge, excellent pedagogy, and effective leadership as you:

  • Take a variety of courses in your content area, leading to a deeper and broader understanding of the content you’ll  teach.
  • Earn both a degree and teaching license in four years.
  • Learn content knowledge and classroom instruction simultaneously.
  • Practice and refine your teaching skills in content area and education courses.
  • Participate in field experience opportunities in public schools.

Our college offers three majors with the Professional Education Option that lead to Initial "A" licensure in North Carolina:

We also offer an ESL add-on to a primary licensure area.

For curricular information about each major, please visit the individual program pages.
