International Studies student Zialliah Ascalon was recently awarded the 2025 City of Raleigh Environmental Award for Climate Action – Community Engagement in recognition of her deep commitment to environmental conservation, community engagement and sustainability leadership!
Zialliah chose her path out of a desire to address the intersection of environmental and socioeconomic issues, both locally and globally. 🌎 Off campus, she has spent multiple summers with the City of Raleigh Office of Sustainability, supporting climate communications, enhancing the BikeRaleigh program, and now serving as a Pathways to Public Service Fellow.
Congratulations, Zialliah! 👏

“Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.”
We’re excited to bring something special to Caldwell Lounge this summer! 🎨

Why does bee diversity matter? Can beehives on corporate campuses help rebuild sustainable agriculture? How does a honeybee colony create a queen? And what does CHASS have to do with bees? 🤔
From an idea that was sparked while studying abroad during undergraduate studies, Leigh-Kathryn Bonner (International Studies, ‘15) went on to found @beedowntown where she is now setting the standard for corporate sustainability with hives on the campuses of Cox Enterprise, Delta, MetLife, Cisco, Microsoft, New York Stock Exchange and many more.
Revisit this episode of @ncstate “Red Chair Chats” and hear how this fourth-generation beekeeper and CHASS alumna is cultivating great places to work through agricultural education. Link in bio 🔗

Student commencement speaker Terrica Lewis is living proof that it’s never too late to chase your dream. ✨
Her journey – through military service, motherhood, creative work and a bachelor’s degree 18 years in the making – is one of resilience and purpose.
Terrica will turn her tassel this weekend at @ncstate’s Spring 2025 Commencement and walk away with a degree in communication. Her path hasn’t been traditional, but it’s been defined by determination and the belief that failure is simply part of growth.
“One of the most important things the military taught me was how to learn from others – regardless of age, class, race or creed,” she says. Terrica voiced that those early lessons followed her into every classroom she entered, including when she earned an associates degree in photography.
Those creative and technical skills intersected during her time at NC State and guided the way she approaches communication. Terrica’s return to school, however, was not just about finishing what she started; she describes it as the transformation power of education. She says she chose NC State for its blend of innovation, accessibility, and diversity of thought. She called the communication program the perfect fit since it blends all her passions – technology, media, justice and education.
We can’t wait to hear you address #NCState25, Terrica! ❤️

Flashback to our scholarship reception dinner where scholarship recipients and donors gathered for conversation and connection over dinner. 🙂
This year, four young alumni returned home for a panel Q&A with Dean Dannels. The CHASS alumni shared advice to current students as well as many thanks to the scholarship donors who impacted their lives greatly while attending @ncstate.
