Dean’s Reflections: Looking Back and Looking Ahead

Since moving into the CHASS dean’s office nearly six years ago -- I became interim dean 16 May, 2008 -- issues have come at me with a speed and fury that make strategic thinking and reflection difficult at best. It’s often challenging to think past the end of the day, much less think about strategic direction. So when the provost asked me recently to make a presentation that looked back over my term as dean and also looked to the future, I relished the opportunity.

A Heart to Heart Conversation

March 7, 2014, was a red letter day for the humanities and social sciences, as prominent leaders gathered to discuss "The Heart of the Matter." The discussion builds on a bipartisan report produced at Congress’ request by the American Academy for the Arts and Sciences. The report and our event are intended to help leaders in government, industry and philanthropy understand the importance of the humanities and social sciences for America--and what they need to do to ensure that we continue to have a vibrant, secure and prosperous nation.

Meet Your 2014 Dean for a Day

Tiffany Johnson, a political science and communication major, will trade places with Dean Jeff Braden on February 12. Johnson will serve as Dean for a Day, while Braden takes classes ranging from "Administration of Justice" and "Supreme Court and Public Policy" to "Intro to Film" and "Communication and Technology." Will he make good grades? Will she change the course of the college? Stay tuned!

Community Service Drives CHASS Holiday Project

The CHASS dean's office got into the holiday spirit by organizing a community service project -- a friendly competition to support NC State's Feed the Pack food pantry. Dean Jeff Braden challenged other offices around campus to collect canned goods and other non-perishables. As an incentive, the dean promised that he and his staff would sing carols when they came to pick up the food and gift cards on December 16. Fa la la la la ...

Our college's annual Dean for a Day event allows one undergraduate student to trade places with the dean for 24 hours. This year's search for the student who will lead CHASS for a day has begun.
