Documenting ‘A Hell of a Life’: NC State video producer’s documentary delivers raw look at moonshiner Popcorn Sutton

In his latest film about moonshiner Popcorn Sutton, NC State video producer and alumnus Neal Hutcheson delivers a broader picture of the folk legend's life. “Popcorn Sutton — A Hell of a Life” explores Sutton’s moonshine enterprise, rise to notoriety and fall into the legal and health troubles that led to his defiant suicide.

The Philanthropy Journal is resuming publishing after more than a year of hiatus. The free, online publication was re-launched April 6, 2015, under new leadership. In addition to providing resources for nonprofits, it will focus on serving as a vehicle for nonprofits and philanthropists to tell their stories.

Take a Virtual Front Pew Seat to Hear MLK’s “Fill Up the Jails”

On February 16, 1960, Martin Luther King, Jr., delivered his first public endorsement of non-violent direct action as a means to achieve civil and human rights. Fifty years later, NC State University’s Virtual Martin Luther King Jr. Project has launched a website that includes a digital audio re-creation that puts listeners in the pews to hear the widely influential "Fill Up the Jails" speech.

Richard M. Clerkin, Ph.D., has been named executive director of the Institute for Nonprofit Research, Education and Engagement at NC State University. He will lead the institute’s research, teaching and engagement, and work with North Carolina nonprofit partners to extend NC State research to serve the state.

Seeking Global Strategic Partners: Travels to Uganda

NC State seeks out strategic partners around the globe. That quest took Dean Jeff Braden to Uganda recently, where he led a university delegation to explore the potential for partnerships between Makarere University, the Kingdom of Buganda, The Aids Support Organization (TASO), and the Maamma Watali Project. His goal was to assess the resources, capabilities and needs there in order to advise NC State's Office of International Affairs on whether or how to proceed in developing these international partnerships.

Film Brings Cherokee Language to Life

If current trends aren’t soon reversed, the Cherokee language will soon go extinct. NC State’s North Carolina Language and Life Project has produced a film documenting the tribe’s efforts and sounding a call to save the language. First Language: The Race to Save Cherokee premieres Friday, Nov. 21, at the NC Museum of History.
