NC State Initiative Sets Gold Standard for Language Diversity

After reaching thousands of students, faculty and staff on its Raleigh campus, NC State’s Educating the Educated program is quickly becoming a national model for language diversity education. The National Association of Student Personnel Administrators affirmed the program's broadening impact, awarding Educating the Educated its grand gold medal for excellence.

In Memoriam: Burton Beers

Burton Floyd Beers, professor emeritus of history, passed away on January 30, 2016. Beers served as a member of NC State's history faculty from 1955 until his retirement in 1996. He earned a reputation as a teacher-scholar, an advocate of public education, a leader and public servant. Beers earned the university's first Holladay Medal and also received the Watauga Medal, the university's highest nonacademic honor. He will be remembered for his dedication to his students and colleagues, his love of family and friends, and the positive outlook that rubbed off on everyone around him.

Psychology Students Win Awards for Education, Family-based Research

Senior psychology majors Rahma Hida and Ebony Leon have pursued their undergraduate research interests into the real world, not simply for the sake of their transcripts, but to answer important questions. Both students, who participate in the Initiative Maximizing Student Diversity at NC State, recently received research awards for their respective projects at the 2015 Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students.

Psychologists ask: What motivates older adults to stay active?

As we age, it can be harder to do what’s good for the mind. While research shows that regularly exercising the brain, for instance, can help older adults mitigate normal declines in cognition, that effort comes with costs — such as mental fatigue — that typically increase as we get older. Psychologists at NC State University want to know how those increased costs affect our motivation to engage in cognitively-rewarding tasks.

Retiring NC State Poet Helped Save Endangered Script from Extinction

After trending toward extinction for decades, the fate of Vietnam’s ancient script, Chữ Nôm, now has a healthier outlook. NC State English professor John Balaban has helped lead many of the developments that kick-started Nôm’s rebound from an endangered calligraphic way of writing to a preserved tradition.

Psychology Professor Serves on White House Team

Psychology professor Lori Foster was tapped to serve on the White House Social and Behavioral Sciences Team, a multi-disciplinary group of experts that is helping federal agencies streamline access to their programs and improve how they communicate with constituents. President Obama has signed an executive order directing federal agencies to use behavioral science insights to better serve the American people.
