Working Odd Shifts Can Hurt Parent/Child Relationships

Research from NC State's Department of Sociology and Anthropology indicates that working a job that doesn’t keep 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. hours can hurt the relationships between parents and adolescents, increasing the likelihood that children will engage in delinquent behaviors. In some circumstances, though, an unconventional work schedule can be a benefit for children.

Our college's annual Dean for a Day event allows one undergraduate student to trade places with the dean for 24 hours. This year's search for the student who will lead CHASS for a day has begun.

November Student of the Month

Halle Mangrum is a sophomore majoring in English. She is a Caldwell Fellow who has been a Technician staff writer, a cast member of NC State's The Heidi Chronicles, and a member of student groups such as Habitat for Humanity. She currently enjoys working on short films and on her first novel.

They're located in Caldwell Lounge and ready for walk-ins.

Philip Barefoot is a senior majoring in History and Political Science. He is active in his departmental student clubs and honor societies, and has had government, legal and nonprofit internships. He is currently researching Southern politics, and he looks forward to attending law school after graduation.

Nonprofit, International Studies Lead Grad to Address Global Women’s Health

CHASS alumna Tracy DiTucci (International Studies with a minor in Nonprofit Studies, '11) travels the world working with the nonprofit women's health organization, Ipas. Her studies provided her “with a framework for better understanding the unique role that nonprofits play in society and the different challenges and opportunities they face."

NEH Internships Reinforce the Value of the Humanities

Bryan A. Hum (Poli Sci '13) and Micah Khater (Senior, History) spent the summer of 2013 as interns for the National Endowment for the Humanities in Washington, D.C. They learned about the importance of the humanities in society and worked on an array of projects for the organization.
