February Student of the Month

Elizabeth Medlin is a double major in International Studies and Spanish, with a Political Science minor. She participated in the NC State Ethnographic Field School in Guatemala (Summer 2013) and is an intern for the NC Immigrant Rights Project. Active in student groups, honor societies and research, she plans to attend law school for immigration law.

Calling all poets: The 2014 Statewide Poetry Contest is accepting entries. Sponsored by the NC State University Creative Writing program, the contest is one of the largest literary competitions in the region. This year's guest judge is acclaimed poet Li-Young Lee.

NC State graduate students in the Masters of Social Work (MSW) program are conducting on-the-ground research for international nonprofit Stop Hunger Now in the Dominican Republic, where they are visiting medical facilities, orphanages and schools to evaluate the impact Stop Hunger Now is having there.

Brooke Wilner is a sophomore Caldwell Fellow and Benjamin Franklin Scholar, pursuing a degree in both English and Aerospace Engineering. She is involved with the Feed The Pack Food Pantry, Writing and Speaking Tutorial Services, and CSLEP's Leadership in Action program. She studied abroad at Oxford in Summer 2013.

Meet Your 2014 Dean for a Day

Tiffany Johnson, a political science and communication major, will trade places with Dean Jeff Braden on February 12. Johnson will serve as Dean for a Day, while Braden takes classes ranging from "Administration of Justice" and "Supreme Court and Public Policy" to "Intro to Film" and "Communication and Technology." Ashley Shaw is a senior majoring in social work. A university ambassador, orientation counselor and Phi Alpha Honors Society member, Ashley has studied abroad in Guatemala and worked with groups that promote awareness about relationship violence. She looks forward to earning her master's of social work after graduation.

Working Odd Shifts Can Hurt Parent/Child Relationships

Research from NC State's Department of Sociology and Anthropology indicates that working a job that doesn’t keep 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. hours can hurt the relationships between parents and adolescents, increasing the likelihood that children will engage in delinquent behaviors. In some circumstances, though, an unconventional work schedule can be a benefit for children.
