Jason Jefferies (MA, English, '08) is the programming coordinator for the NC Literary Festival taking place April 3 - 6 in and around NC State's Hunt Library. Two CHASS Alums Receive 2014 Watauga Medals

CHASS alumni Peaches Gunter Blank (BA, political science and MA, public administration) and Burley Mitchell (BA, political science) have received the Watauga Medal, the university's highest nonacademic award, for their extraordinary service and commitment to NC State.

NC Tech Association CEO Earns National Praise

CHASS alum Brooks Raiford, CEO of the NC Technology Association, has earned the national "TechVoice Champion" award for his advocacy on behalf of the tech sector. Raiford, outgoing president of the CHASS advisory board, is a former president of the NC State student senate and the student body.

From Wolfpack Red to Blue Man Group Blue

Brian Tavener (Communication, ‘04) did something very unusual for an NC State alumnus: he turned blue. Tavener, a former Park Scholar, has been a member of the Blue Man Group, an international spectacle in which the performers dress in bald caps, blue-black costumes and makeup, for more than six years. Blue Man Group performances are regularly seen across the country and around the world.

Friends look to document, celebrate Hondros’ life

Friends of the late Chris Hondros are making a documentary to honor his life and career. "He was one of the greatest photographers of all time," says his friend Greg Campbell. "He had developed into the elder statesman of conflict photographers. Everyone respected him, even his competitors. He was a master of his environment." In 2011, Hondros was fatally wounded in a mortar attack in Libya.

CHASS has a long history of fostering student leadership. That legacy is chronicled in a website created by NC State Libraries that uses oral histories, documents, photos and videos to share the experiences of more than 130 of the university's top former student leaders.

Gusler’s Gusto

First-generation college student Gus Gusler switched his major from engineering to political science during the turbulent 1960s, and served as NC State's student body president. These days, in addition to running his entertainment law office, he owns and operates the Players Retreat, where he worked as a cook during those undergraduate years.

A Career Path Forged in Ancient History

History alumnus Andrew Smith (BA '90, MA '95) was the first in his family to attend college. Oxford University Press has just published his book, "Roman Palmyra: Identity, Community, and State Formation." His former history professor says Smith is "like a poster child for our M.A. in ancient history. His career path illustrates how our master's program serves as a bridge between the bachelor's degree and a strong doctoral program."

Following sports — through a viewfinder

When Communication alum Tim Tew watches sports, he has a different vantage point than most fans. He watches games through an inch-and-a-half viewfinder. Tew is a freelance cameraman. He is a regular on ESPN’s crew for Monday Night Football games in the NFL and has been on the sidelines for several Super Bowls. But his favorite assignments may still be ACC basketball games.
