Laila Knio (Psychology, French ’17) plans to become a physician. She's also committed to global concerns. So when she studied abroad, she filmed a documentary in war-torn Lebanon to highlight "extraordinary people who have helped others despite religious or ethnic differences."

Seeking Global Strategic Partners: Travels to Uganda

NC State seeks out strategic partners around the globe. That quest took Dean Jeff Braden to Uganda recently, where he led a university delegation to explore the potential for partnerships between Makarere University, the Kingdom of Buganda, The Aids Support Organization (TASO), and the Maamma Watali Project. His goal was to assess the resources, capabilities and needs there in order to advise NC State's Office of International Affairs on whether or how to proceed in developing these international partnerships.

Celebrating the Khayrallah Center for Lebanese Diaspora Studies

NC State recently celebrated an exceptionally generous $8.1 million gift to endow the Moise A. Khayrallah Center for Lebanese Diaspora Studies in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. Representing the largest single gift in the history of the college, the Khayrallahs are creating the first privately endowed center at NC State, and the world’s first center on Lebanese culture and history outside of Lebanon. Kim Thanh Vu, a senior majoring in Social Work and minoring in Biology, envisions a career as an occupational therapist. She founded Crafts for a Cause, bringing together students who share a passion for crafting and philanthropy. She was a 2013-14 Resident Mentor, interned at the Alexander Family YMCA, and traveled to Guatemala for Spring 2014 Alternative Spring Break.

A gift to establish the Moise A. Khayrallah Center for Lebanese Diaspora Studies will firmly establish NC State as the premier research and outreach center on the Lebanese Diaspora. The gift is the largest single gift in the history of the college and the first privately endowed center at NC State.

Study Abroad Combines Passion for Writing and the Environment

Rebecca Nagy, a senior majoring in English (Language, Writing and Rhetoric) with a minor in Environmental Sciences, studied abroad in Namibia to explore her interests in both writing and conservation. She hiked to the top of sand dunes in the world's oldest desert, kayaked alongside cape fur seals and dolphins, and sat ten feet from a herd of desert elephants.

Alex Hyler is a senior pre-dental student majoring in Spanish Languages and Literatures. She has interned and volunteered in several dental offices and clinics, including one in Bolivia. She studied abroad in Spain, is a Fall 2014 teaching assistant, and founded the NC State Typhoon Haiyan Relief Fundraiser in 2013-14.

Student Research Translates Into Broader Horizons

Tingting Ji is proficient in four languages: Chinese, French, English, and Italian. So when she saw an email about an undergraduate research award that involved translating, the Foreign Languages and Literatures major leapt at the opportunity. As this video shows, her translation project translated into newfound skills, interests, and graduate study.
