Ashley Shaw is a senior majoring in social work. A university ambassador, orientation counselor and Phi Alpha Honors Society member, Ashley has studied abroad in Guatemala and worked with groups that promote awareness about relationship violence. Community Service Drives CHASS Holiday Project

The CHASS dean's office got into the holiday spirit by organizing a community service project -- a friendly competition to support NC State's Feed the Pack food pantry. Dean Jeff Braden challenged other offices around campus to collect canned goods and other non-perishables. Working Odd Shifts Can Hurt Parent/Child Relationships

Research from NC State's Department of Sociology and Anthropology indicates that working a job that doesn’t keep 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. hours can hurt the relationships between parents and adolescents, increasing the likelihood that children will engage in delinquent behaviors. In some circumstances, though, an unconventional work schedule can be a benefit for children.

Three CHASS Faculty Named University Faculty Scholars

Three CHASS faculty members have been named University Faculty Scholars, an honor reserved for top NC State early- and mid-career faculty. John Begeny (Psychology), Akram Khater (History) and Tim Stinson (English) are among 20 NC State faculty who will receive $10,000 in donated funds for each of the next five years to support their academic endeavors.

A Circus Life

As a CHASS student in the 1970s, Bill Allen says his professors inspired him to travel the world trying to solve ecological problems. His wanderlust eventually turned to circus love. Allen is the executive director and producer for Cirque de la Symphonie, a performance company he co-founded in 2005 that blends the European circus tradition with symphony performances.
