Lauding Larson

Bob Larson, a Department of Communication lecturer for the past 14 years, was honored at a reception held to applaud his teaching excellence and to publicly announce the creation of the Bob Larson Communication Award. The award was funded by a local communication business that has employed many of Larson's former students and is meant to reward outstanding students who are focused on a career in public relations.

Cory Blankenship (Political Science '07) is a third generation NC State alum. He's also a member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, and hopes one day to serve his people as Principal Chief.

Educating for Energy Security

Political Science Prof Bill Boettcher gives students a rigorous education about a pressing challenge of the 21st century: energy security. This spring, his students' research took them out of the classroom and into a simulated session where they acted the parts of world energy powers, to the halls of the Pentagon, and beyond. The students' experiences were made possible in part by donations to the College of Humanities and Social Sciences.

Hard Work in High School Pays Off for Dean’s Scholar Award Winners

CHASS awarded its first Dean’s Scholar Awards to four incoming freshmen who were high school standouts. "We wanted to encourage the best and brightest to make NC State and CHASS their first choice,” said Dean Jeff Braden. “After meeting with our first crop of Dean's Scholars, I’m convinced we’re on the right path. These students will make us proud." The scholarships are made possible through contributions to the CHASS Enhancement Fund.

2012 Statewide Short Story Contest Underway

Think you’ve got what it takes to write an award-winning story? Enter the 2012 NC State Short Story Contest, sponsored by the NC State University Creative Writing Program. The annual event, open to all NC residents (some exceptions apply), is one of the largest free literary competitions in the South. The contest has two categories that offer cash prizes and is supported by the Barnhardt Family Fund and other friends of the NC State Creative Writing program.

Dissertation on Visual Thinking Earns Recognition

All too often, doctoral candidates toil in obscurity over their dissertations. But CHASS alum Kelly Martin has earned high recognition for hers. NC State University nominated “Thinking Visually: A Guide to Research Methodologies and Contexts” for the nation’s most prestigious honor for doctoral dissertations, the Council of Graduate Schools /UMI Distinguished Dissertation Award in Social Sciences.

When 658 new CHASS majors -- freshmen and transfer students -- came to campus this summer for orientation, CHASS alumni were on hand to welcome them, encourage them, and share some advice from their side of the diploma. During panel presentations during orientation, alumni offered their words of wisdom.

Forging a Sustainable Path

For some students, college is a fairly straightforward path: Choose a major you enjoy, take the required courses and eventually graduate. For others, such as Ariel Fugate, the road is full of twists and turns. Fugate, a Caldwell Fellow, forged a path that took her from zoology through wildlife and fisheries and agriculture, into a close examination of sociology, and finally, to a major she designed herself in the college’s interdisciplinary studies program.
