September Student of the Month

Alex Hyler is a senior pre-dental student majoring in Spanish Languages and Literatures. She has interned and volunteered in several dental offices and clinics, including one in Bolivia. She studied abroad in Spain, is a Fall 2014 teaching assistant, and founded the NC State Typhoon Haiyan Relief Fundraiser in 2013-14.

Student Research Translates Into Broader Horizons

Tingting Ji is proficient in four languages: Chinese, French, English, and Italian. So when she saw an email about an undergraduate research award that involved translating, the Foreign Languages and Literatures major leapt at the opportunity. As this video shows, her translation project translated into newfound skills, interests, and graduate study.

Embracing Language Diversity at NC State

Humanities and Social Sciences alum Stephany Dunstan's award-winning dissertation focused on how dialects influence the college experience. In typical NC State Think And Do fashion, now she's working with sociolinguist Walt Wolfram and others to apply her findings in ways that raise awareness and celebrate just how richly diverse we are at NC State, every which way we say it.

In Case of Emergency: Reaching Vulnerable Groups

Alton Russell ’14 combined his interests in global health and in industrial engineering to fashion his self-designed major in interdisciplinary studies. The Park scholar felt an engineering degree alone was insufficient to address health problems "that are not only technically innovative but also grounded in an understanding of human factors. A technically viable solution is useful only to the extent that it is compatible with cultural and political realities." He applied what he learned to help develop an emergency communication network to reach marginalized populations in North Carolina.

Boots on the Ground at NC State’s Language Training Center

If you were in Raleigh or on NC State’s campus earlier this summer, you may have bumped into a large group of young people speaking Arabic. Wonder no more: they were members of the military from Ft. Fisher, Ft. Bragg and NC State who were studying Arabic language and culture through the university's Language Training Center.

Associate professor of political science Michael Cobb knows how to find out what people really think. He's an expert in polling -- from creating the questionnaires, conducting the surveys and collecting the data to analyzing, interpreting and sharing the results. And he's preparing students to be proficient pollsters.

Mathews Medalist Promoted Sustainable Practices

Caroline Hansley received the Mathews Medal, given for outstanding leadership and service to a few select NC State seniors. Hansley channeled her passion for sustainability to create the Green Ambassadors program on campus. She majored in interdisciplinary studies with a concentration in agroecology and social entrepreneurship.
