Wilton Barnhardt’s New Novel: Lookaway, Lookaway

Wilton Barnhardt, professor of creative writing, published his first novel when he was 29. After covering stock car racing for Sports Illustrated, he came to NC State as a faculty member in the Master of Fine Arts program when it enrolled its first students in 2005. Barnhardt models his novels after the classics of the 19th century in the tradition of Charles Dickens and Henry James. He’s written sprawling novels about New York, Hollywood and religion. His fourth novel, Lookaway, Lookaway, covers the South.

No Worries for New Teachers

New teachers worry whether their students will like them, question their credibility, or worse: learn nothing worthwhile. Professor of Communication Deanna Dannels has coached hundreds of new teachers and hears these very concerns and the questions that arise from them. In her new book, Eight Essential Questions Teachers Ask: A Guidebook for Communicating with Students (Oxford University Press, 2014), Dannels shows teachers how to overcome their concerns by understanding the research, learning from mentors, and facing their fears.

Karen Bullock Named Head, Department of Social Work

The Department of Social Work welcomes Karen Bullock as head, effective July 1, 2013. Bullock joined NC State in January 2011 after nine years as a tenured faculty member at the School of Social Work at the University of Connecticut. She has been a leading force in advancing social work practice, education and training in gerontology, mental health and care at end of life.

Institute for Nonprofits Leadership Changes

After leading the College of Humanities and Social Sciences’ Institute for Nonprofits for five years, Professor Mary Tschirhart is leaving NC State for Ohio State University, where she will return to full-time scholarship and teaching. Richard Clerkin, Associate Professor of Public Administration, will serve as interim director, effective July 1. The college will conduct an international search for a senior scholar who will be appointed in Public Administration and serve as permanent director.
