Boots on the Ground at NC State’s Language Training Center

If you were in Raleigh or on NC State’s campus earlier this summer, you may have bumped into a large group of young people speaking Arabic. Wonder no more: they were members of the military from Ft. Fisher, Ft. Bragg and NC State who were studying Arabic language and culture through the university's Language Training Center.

English Professor Ding Wins TCQ Nell Ann Pickett Award

Associate Professor of English, Huiling Ding, has been chosen for the Nell Ann Pickett Award for her article, “Transcultural Risk Communication and Viral Discourses: Grassroots Movements to Manage Global Risks of H1N1 Flu Pandemic.” This award is given for best article in Technical Communication Quarterly (TCQ) for the 2013 publication year.

Student Advisers Honored

When NC State recognized its outstanding undergraduate academic advisers recently, the College of Humanities and Social Sciences was well represented. Two of the five university employees who received awards for their efforts to support and encourage students were from CHASS. Congratulations to Linda Williams and Roy Stamper.

Wolfram Earns State’s Highest Civilian Honor

Professor of English Walt Wolfram has been honored with the state of North Carolina's highest civilian honor for his commitment to public service. Wolfram received the North Carolina award at a ceremony hosted by Governor Pat McCrory.

Three CHASS Faculty Named University Faculty Scholars

Three CHASS faculty members have been named University Faculty Scholars, an honor reserved for top NC State early- and mid-career faculty. John Begeny (Psychology), Akram Khater (History) and Tim Stinson (English) are among 20 NC State faculty who will receive $10,000 in donated funds for each of the next five years to support their academic endeavors.

NC State named two faculty members as Distinguished Professors in 2013, and both are from the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. Congratulations to Professor of Religious Studies William Adler and Professor of History David Gilmartin.

Susan Navey-Davis’ Presentation Named One of Ten Best of 2013 SCOLT Conference

A session presented by Susan Navey-Davis, FLL Assistant Head for Student Affairs, was named one of the Ten Best of the 2013 Conference of the Southern Conference on Language Teaching (SCOLT) held in Birmingham, AL in April. This year, 105 sessions were presented by 114 presenters. This is the second time that Susan’s work has made…

2013 Faculty Awards

Faculty from the College of Humanities and Social Sciences were recently recognized for outstanding accomplishments in teaching, advising, research and engagement at an awards ceremony and reception in Caldwell Lounge. "As we mark our 50th year as a distinct college, we continue to come into our own, as is reflected in our faculty's accomplishments," said CHASS Dean Jeff Braden. "The scholarship, commitment, and passion represented by these awards demonstrate the breadth of excellence in our faculty."
