Making Good Cops Better

The college's Administrative Officers Management Program is designed to develop management and leadership skills among law enforcement personnel. Since it launched in 1989, AOMP has graduated more than 1,700 officers from 140 different agencies and 13 different states. The most recent class comprised more than 365 years of law enforcement experience.

The college diet portrayed by popular culture consists of ramen noodles, hopes and dreams. Thanks to NC State’s new food pantry, Feed the Pack, much more nutritious food is now available to the NC State community.

Unleash Your Inner Poet

Calling all poets: The 2013 Statewide Poetry Contest is officially accepting entries. The contest, sponsored by the NC State University Creative Writing program, is the one of the largest literary competitions in the region. Deadline for submissions is March 1. Guest judge Michael Wiegers, executive editor of Copper Canyon Press, will announce the winners April 3.

Lincoln’s Legacy for Our Time

You've seen Lincoln, the movie. Now hear James McPherson, the Lincoln expert. The Civil War historian and Pulitzer Prize-winning author will deliver a talk titled, “Lincoln’s Legacy for Our Time” as part of NC State’s History Weekend. (Saturday, Feb. 16, 10:00 - noon, in Room 232A of Withers Hall on the NC State campus.)

The course, offered through the Institute for Nonprofits, addresses endowments from the perspective of the history of foundations and their connections to the philanthropic world.

Offhand hobbit comment inspires prankster philanthropy

Some of the most creative fundraising starts with an offhand remark, perhaps even a sarcastic jab, followed by a classic light bulb moment. For example, one person - for the sake of argument, let's say he's a distinguished professor at NC State - might comment via social media about "The Hobbit" that nobody could pay him enough money to see the movie. Bemused friends joke that the challenge should be posted on eBay or Kickstarter. That's when friends quickly organized an online drive to persuade Professor John Kessel, winner of a Nebula Award for science fiction/fantasy writing and a member of the CHASS Department of English, to turn the joke into a serious fundraiser.

Teaching Teens Nanotech Ethics

High school students gathered from across the state at Durham's School of Science and Math to learn about the ethical issues surrounding nanotechnologies from political scientist Mike Cobb and chemical engineer Jesse Jur, who encouraged the teens to expand their views about the future of technology.

Alum Blogs About Placemaking

Kristin Jeffers makes a place for urban planning, or "placemaking," in her blog, The Black Urbanist. Started in 2010, Jeffers' blog was simply an outlet for her to communicate her passion for city planning and development to potential employers. The blog later turned into a guide for her current career and influences what notions to put into action.

Institute for Nonprofits Director Named Entrepreneur of the Year

NC State University's Office of Technology Transfer recently honored Mary Tschirhart as Entrepreneur of the Year. Professor Tschirhart was recognized for her contributions related to promoting social entrepreneurship and building a culture of entrepreneurship at NC State. She is director of NC State University’s Institute for Nonprofit Research, Education and Engagement and a professor of Public Administration.
