Dissertation on Visual Thinking Earns Recognition

All too often, doctoral candidates toil in obscurity over their dissertations. But CHASS alum Kelly Martin has earned high recognition for hers. NC State University nominated “Thinking Visually: A Guide to Research Methodologies and Contexts” for the nation’s most prestigious honor for doctoral dissertations, the Council of Graduate Schools /UMI Distinguished Dissertation Award in Social Sciences.

Researchers from NC State University have conducted the first nationally representative survey in the United States to gauge public opinion on the use of genetic manipulations to drive down mosquito populations and related diseases. While public support varies, depending on how the mosquitoes are characterized, a plurality opposes the effort when potential risks are explained.

Social Networking Pays Off More in the U.S. than in Germany

New research from NC State University's Department of Sociology and Anthropology shows that informal social networks play an important role when it comes to finding jobs in both the United States and Germany. But those "who you know" networks are significantly more important for high-paying jobs in the United States – which may contribute to economic inequality.

Interns connect classroom to careers

An article in the Technician highlights two CHASS students who are participating in the State Government Internship Program. Susan Camilleri, a graduate student in public administration, is interning with the Department of Administration, where she's assisting the legislative liaison with tracking bills. Cody Munson, a sophoomore in communication, is working with the Division of Governance Office within the Department of Transportation. The two students are among 56 students chosen from across the state for the prestigious internship program that helps students connect classroom material to potential careers.

Study Shows that in Restaurants, Race Matters

A new study from NC State University shows that more than one-third of restaurant servers discriminate against African-American customers. Sarah Rusche, a Ph.D. candidate in sociology at NC State, co-authored a paper describing the study with CHASS alum Dr. Zachary Brewster of Wayne State University, who earned his doctoral degree in sociology in 2009.

Keeping a Dialect Alive on Ocracoke

Professor Walt Wolfram has taken students to the Outer Banks for spring break for 20 years. The annual expedition at first involved conducting research on the Outer Banks brogue. Now the trip aims to teach young Ocracokers about a tongue rarely spoken by anyone but the elderly. Wolfram says coming back to teach each year brings linguistic insights gleaned from Ocracoke back home.

Foot Bones Allow Researchers To Determine Sex of Skeletal Remains

Law enforcement officials who are tasked with identifying a body based on partial skeletal remains have a new tool at their disposal. A paper recently published in the Journal of Forensic Sciences by Sheena Harris (MA, Anthropology '09) and Associate Professor of Anthropology Troy Case details how to determine the biological sex of skeletal remains based solely on measurements of the seven tarsal bones in the feet.

Older Adults Make Gains Through Gaming

For some older adults, the online video game World of Warcraft (WoW) may provide more than just an opportunity for escapist adventure. Researchers from North Carolina State University have found that playing WoW actually boosted cognitive functioning for older adults – particularly those adults who had scored poorly on cognitive ability tests before playing the game.
