NC State Seeks Artists for Mural Highlighting CHASS’ Impact

NC State invites proposals from artists to create a mural in Caldwell Hall Lounge for the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHASS). The mural will highlight CHASS’ role in addressing global challenges through critical thinking, cultural understanding and human-centered solutions.
It will also serve as a source of pride for students, faculty, staff, alumni and visitors, and a reflection of the college’s mission. Additionally, it will enhance NC State’s public art collection, contributing to the campus’ cultural landscape.
“This mural is an exciting example of the path we are charting as a college — one that combines the insights of the humanities and social sciences with innovation to address today’s complex societal issues,” said Deanna Dannels, dean of the college. “It will celebrate our values and empower everyone who enters Caldwell Lounge to reflect, connect and engage with the power of the human experience.”
The mural is part of a broader CHASS effort to enhance the college’s identity and communicate its contributions to the university, state and world. It will be installed during the summer of 2025 on the west wall of Caldwell Lounge, a favorite campus gathering spot known for its bright and welcoming atmosphere. The initiative is a collaborative effort between the college, NC State’s Public Art Committee, Campus Planning and Strategic Investment, and the Gregg Museum of Art & Design.
As a liberal arts college within a STEM-intensive university, CHASS integrates the humanities and social sciences with science and technology, preparing graduates for careers in diverse fields, spanning health care, public service, media and many others. With more than 4,500 students and 43,000 living alumni, CHASS embodies NC State’s “Think and Do” mantra, applying expertise to solve real-world problems and bridge scholarship and society.
