Search for Dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences Underway

After leading the College of Humanities and Social Sciences as dean for more than 11 years, Jeff Braden is returning to the faculty in July 2021. Provost Warwick Arden officially launched an open search for the college’s next dean.

“I have appreciated Jeff’s leadership throughout his time at NC State,” said Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost Warwick Arden. “He has been an outstanding advocate for the College of Humanities and Social Sciences and for providing all our students with a comprehensive education. Thanks to his efforts, the college is on a very solid foundation that will allow the new dean to focus on strategic issues aligned with the university’s new strategic plan.”  

The nomination committee is chaired by Dean Mark Hoversten of the College of Design. The committee members each represent a group of college constituents including faculty from each department, department heads, administration, EHRA non-faculty staff, SHRA staff, students and the Dean’s Board. Committee members are:

Executive Search Services in NC State’s Human Resources division will be assisting the committee. Kelly Wick will be the Provost’s Office liaison for this search.

The nomination committee will hold its first meeting later today and will continue to work during the fall and spring semesters. Braden has served for over 15 years in the administration of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, and has been a professor of psychology at NC State since 2003. He directed the university’s School Psychology Program from 2004 to 2007, when he became the college’s associate dean for research and graduate studies. He was named dean in 2008.

Before coming to NC State, Dean Braden taught and directed school psychology programs at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, San Jose State University and the University of Florida. He holds graduate degrees from the University of California, Berkeley, Gallaudet University and Beloit College.
