Why did you choose to study abroad?

To experience a new learning experience, while being able to learn more about another culture and their way of doing things.

What did you learn about yourself?

I learned that I am capable of being adaptable even in unpleasant scenarios.

What was one of your favorite parts of your program?

Visiting a local school and interacting with the children there and the food.

What advice do you have to future study abroad students?

Don’t be afraid to try new things. Enjoy the full experience and make life long memories.

How did your study abroad experience prepare you for your future career?

I don’t choose who I have to interact with, and there may be barriers that are between us, but nevertheless we have to work together to achieve the common goal.

In what ways did your identity have an impact on your experience abroad?

As a child I always received the “Go back to Africa” jokes, and always wondering if this was a place I belonged. On the other side, looking at how the media paints Africa as this place that is in need and can’t sustain itself. Going there and seeing the beauty and history there was breathtaking. Being able to go to a place that was so far away showed me that I can do more than I ever thought I was capable of achieving.

Is there any advice you would give to other students who share your identity?

Don’t doubt, just do.

Where did you find support to navigate any challenges you faced abroad?

The staff and guides were very helpful.

Would you do it again?

Definitely.
