Research Tests Success of Conditional Poverty Aid

How can countries best address institutional poverty? One method -- called conditional cash transfer, or CCT -- rewards socially beneficial actions. For example, a CCT program may give a family money in exchange for sending its children to school or regular medical check-ups. Master of International Studies student Lesa Sexton set out to discover if national CCT programs in Mexico and Brazil are having a major impact on education for children living in poverty.

Study Highlights Local Voices on Tourism Development in Guatemala

Some cities surrounding Guatemala's Lake Atitlán have greatly benefitted from tourism. Other towns haven’t seen the same rate of development. NC State graduate student Adriana Szabo spent eight weeks studying the uneven trend in San Pedro La Laguna, a town on the shore of Lake Atitlán. Her research, rooted in an analysis of ethnographic research she collected during her trip, raises up the voices of locals who want to change the tourism development model.

Research Into Lean Stigma Gives Undergrad New Insights

Through undergraduate research, NC State communication major Lauren Ray is helping provide insight into how formerly overweight or obese individuals navigate those social barriers. Working as a research assistant with faculty mentor Dr. Lynsey Romo, Ray aided in a study examining the interpersonal challenges of lean stigma and the communicative strategies people use to manage those threats.

After transferring to NC State in 2015, Tarang Malaviya says he was inspired to "seek solutions to current problems." So, that's what he did. Volunteering to assist a doctoral student with environmental communication research, Malaviya helped study how mobile phone applications can help the public make sustainable choices.

In addition to working two internships at nonprofit organizations, Cannon is a Multicultural Student Affairs Office student assistant, an officer in three student groups and looks forward to getting her doctorate in Public Health.

Their work, which provides further insight into the evolution of Spanish in North Carolina, also serves as a clear example of the kind of purposeful, community-based research that can be carried out by undergraduates.
