November Student of the Month

Spechel Wooten is a senior with majors in anthropology and criminology, and a minor in forensic science. She has interned with the Wake County Public Defender's Office, NC State Bureau of Investigation, and NC State's CSLEPS. She has worked on campus for University Housing and University Conference Services. She intends to apply to law school after graduation in December 2014.

October Student of the Month

Kim Thanh Vu, a senior majoring in Social Work and minoring in Biology, envisions a career as an occupational therapist. She founded Crafts for a Cause, bringing together students who share a passion for crafting and philanthropy. She was a 2013-14 Resident Mentor, interned at the Alexander Family YMCA, and traveled to Guatemala for Spring 2014 Alternative Spring Break.

Alex Hyler is a senior pre-dental student majoring in Spanish Languages and Literatures. She has interned and volunteered in several dental offices and clinics, including one in Bolivia. She studied abroad in Spain, is a Fall 2014 teaching assistant, and founded the NC State Typhoon Haiyan Relief Fundraiser in 2013-14.

Kirsten Henning is a junior in Communication who has had three internships to date during her time in CHASS. "It’s been beneficial to intern for a number of different companies," she says. "It allows me to try new things and gives me the chance to find something that I really enjoy."

Internship Enables Student to Aid Immigrants

Emily Scotton ‘15 (front row, second from left) recently completed an internship that connected multiple dots between her career interests and her majors in Spanish and political science and her minor in nonprofit studies. In addition to practicing her Spanish, the Park scholar learned how nonprofits serve the community. What's more, Scotton -- who's interested in a law career -- got to see how immigration law applies in a nonprofit setting and even assisted in writing an affidavit. Think and Do!

Interns connect classroom to careers

An article in the Technician highlights two CHASS students who are participating in the State Government Internship Program. Susan Camilleri, a graduate student in public administration, is interning with the Department of Administration, where she's assisting the legislative liaison with tracking bills. Cody Munson, a sophoomore in communication, is working with the Division of Governance Office within the Department of Transportation. The two students are among 56 students chosen from across the state for the prestigious internship program that helps students connect classroom material to potential careers.
