Study Finds Gaming Augments Players’ Social Lives

New research finds that online social behavior isn’t replacing offline social behavior in the gaming community. Instead, online gaming is expanding players’ social lives. Nick Taylor, an assistant professor of communication at NC State, is lead author of a paper on the study.

Study Shows Mentally Ill More Likely to be Victims, Not Perpetrators, of Violence

New research shows that almost one-third of adults with mental illness are likely to be victims of violence within a six-month period, and that adults with mental illness who commit violence are most likely to do so in residential settings. NC State assistant professor of psychology Sarah Desmarais is lead author of a paper describing work done by researchers at NC State, RTI International, and three other universities. The study also finds a strong correlation between being a victim of violence and committing a violent act.

Forensic Experts Compile Guide on How to ID Child Abuse, Starvation

Forensic science experts from NC State University are publishing a comprehensive overview of forensic research that can be used to identify child abuse and starvation. “By pulling all of this information together in one place, we hope we can save the lives of some children and find justice for others,” says Dr. Ann Ross, a professor of anthropology at NC State and lead author of the paper.

Three CHASS Faculty Named University Faculty Scholars

Three CHASS faculty members have been named University Faculty Scholars, an honor reserved for top NC State early- and mid-career faculty. John Begeny (Psychology), Akram Khater (History) and Tim Stinson (English) are among 20 NC State faculty who will receive $10,000 in donated funds for each of the next five years to support their academic endeavors.

Losing weight is generally beneficial for human health, but when one partner in a romantic relationship loses weight, it doesn’t always have a positive effect on the relationship. According to new research from NC State and the University of Texas at Austin, there can be a “dark side” to weight loss, if both partners are not on board with enacting healthy changes.

New research from NC State University and the University of Minnesota finds that people in the United States want labels on food products that use nanotechnology – whether the nanotechnology is in the food or is used in food packaging. The research also shows that many people are willing to pay more for the labeling.

Study Shows Innovative Program Helps Limit Domestic Violence

The statistics are horrifying. Nearly three in 10 women have been stalked or assaulted by their partner, and states reported investigating abuse cases involving 5.9 million children in 2010. Social workers and social work researchers are constantly searching for ways to address domestic violence, and new research from NC State shows that at least one recent program is making a difference.
