CHASS alumni Peaches Gunter Blank (BA, political science and MA, public administration) and Burley Mitchell (BA, political science) have received the Watauga Medal, the university's highest nonacademic award, for their extraordinary service and commitment to NC State.

Public Wants Labels for Food Nanotech

New research from NC State University and the University of Minnesota finds that people in the United States want labels on food products that use nanotechnology – whether the nanotechnology is in the food or is used in food packaging. The research also shows that many people are willing to pay more for the labeling.

Institute for Nonprofits Leadership Changes

After leading the College of Humanities and Social Sciences’ Institute for Nonprofits for five years, Professor Mary Tschirhart is leaving NC State for Ohio State University, where she will return to full-time scholarship and teaching. Richard Clerkin, Associate Professor of Public Administration, will serve as interim director, effective July 1. The college will conduct an international search for a senior scholar who will be appointed in Public Administration and serve as permanent director.

Gusler’s Gusto

First-generation college student Gus Gusler switched his major from engineering to political science during the turbulent 1960s, and served as NC State's student body president. These days, in addition to running his entertainment law office, he owns and operates the Players Retreat, where he worked as a cook during those undergraduate years.

Jim McLay, New Zealand’s ambassador and permanent representative to the United Nations,is the first official ambassador-in-residence for the School of Public and International Affairs. Richard Mahoney, SPIA director, says we can learn a lot from McLay, and from New Zealand. “Americans often discount little countries—but actually countries like New Zealand show us what we should be doing—building international partnerships.

Institute for Nonprofits Director Named Entrepreneur of the Year

NC State University's Office of Technology Transfer recently honored Mary Tschirhart as Entrepreneur of the Year. Professor Tschirhart was recognized for her contributions related to promoting social entrepreneurship and building a culture of entrepreneurship at NC State. She is director of NC State University’s Institute for Nonprofit Research, Education and Engagement and a professor of Public Administration.

Richard Mahoney to direct NC State’s School of Public and International Affairs

Dr. Richard Mahoney has been named director of the college's School of Public and International Affairs at NC State University, effective July 1, 2012. For the past four years, Mahoney has held the Elizabeth Evans Baker Professorship of Peace and Conflict Studies at Juniata College in Huntingdon, Pennsylvania. Mahoney served for four years as Secretary of State of Arizona in the 1990s. He ran for the United States Senate in 1994 and governor in 2002. Mahoney is considered one of the leading historians in the United States on the Kennedys and was the John F. Kennedy Scholar at the University of Massachusetts. He also writes and consults on international security and is currently completing a book on regime change to be published by Oxford University Press. He taught international business management for 20 years at the Thunderbird School of Global Management.

Interns connect classroom to careers

An article in the Technician highlights two CHASS students who are participating in the State Government Internship Program. Susan Camilleri, a graduate student in public administration, is interning with the Department of Administration, where she's assisting the legislative liaison with tracking bills. Cody Munson, a sophoomore in communication, is working with the Division of Governance Office within the Department of Transportation. The two students are among 56 students chosen from across the state for the prestigious internship program that helps students connect classroom material to potential careers.

Fighting Wildfires with Research

Think fighting wildfires is just a job for forest rangers armed with water? Think again. Research in communication practices is improving the ways in which wildfires are handled. Dr. Branda Nowell, associate professor in the Department of Public Administration, is on the front lines as she helps lead a research team dubbed the Fire Chasers who have been researching wildfires since 2008. The team’s goal is to better understand how to make communities more resilient to wildfires and other such disasters.
