Public History graduate students have created Communicating Communities, an exhibit at the City of Raleigh Museum that explores the power of memory and technology, and the ways both have been used to forge identities and connections to the many communities that create North Carolina's capital city.

Jason Jefferies (MA, English, '08) is the programming coordinator for the NC Literary Festival taking place April 3 - 6 in and around NC State's Hunt Library. CHASS alumni Peaches Gunter Blank (BA, political science and MA, public administration) and Burley Mitchell (BA, political science) have received the Watauga Medal, the university's highest nonacademic award, for their extraordinary service and commitment to NC State.

NC Tech Association CEO Earns National Praise

CHASS alum Brooks Raiford, CEO of the NC Technology Association, has earned the national "TechVoice Champion" award for his advocacy on behalf of the tech sector. Raiford, outgoing president of the CHASS advisory board, is a former president of the NC State student senate and the student body.

From Wolfpack Red to Blue Man Group Blue

Brian Tavener (Communication, ‘04) did something very unusual for an NC State alumnus: he turned blue. Tavener, a former Park Scholar, has been a member of the Blue Man Group, an international spectacle in which the performers dress in bald caps, blue-black costumes and makeup, for more than six years. Blue Man Group performances are regularly seen across the country and around the world.

Tomás Carbonell ('02) earned dual degrees in engineering and in CHASS. He says his experiences at NC State and the intense multidisciplinary education he received here were foundational to his work as an environmental attorney with the Environmental Defense Fund.

A Circus Life

As a CHASS student in the 1970s, Bill Allen says his professors inspired him to travel the world trying to solve ecological problems. His wanderlust eventually turned to circus love. Allen is the executive director and producer for Cirque de la Symphonie, a performance company he co-founded in 2005 that blends the European circus tradition with symphony performances.

CHASS alumna Tracy DiTucci (International Studies with a minor in Nonprofit Studies, '11) travels the world working with the nonprofit women's health organization, Ipas. Her studies provided her “with a framework for better understanding the unique role that nonprofits play in society and the different challenges and opportunities they face."

NEH Internships Reinforce the Value of the Humanities

Bryan A. Hum (Poli Sci '13) and Micah Khater (Senior, History) spent the summer of 2013 as interns for the National Endowment for the Humanities in Washington, D.C. They learned about the importance of the humanities in society and worked on an array of projects for the organization.

Face-to-Face: Skull Study Shows Variation of Pre-Columbian Cultures in Mexico

NC State forensic anthropologists have discovered that there were clear differences between indigenous peoples long before Europeans or Africans arrived in what is now Mexico. Their analysis of prehistoric peoples reveals significant regional variation. Contrary to long-held beliefs, all native peoples did not look alike.
