English Professor Named Frederick Burkhardt Fellow

English professor James Mulholland has been named a 2016 recipient of the American Council of Learned Societies Frederick Burkhardt Residential Fellowship. Mulholland, an associate professor of 18th-century British poetry and Anglo-Indian literature, will spend the 2016-17 academic year in residency at the National Humanities Center in Durham. There, he’ll focus on an ongoing book project documenting the rich and unique literary culture of 18th-century British India.

Researchers ID Risk Factors for Violence in Adults With Mental Illness

NC State psychologists have helped identify three risk factors that make adults with mental illness more likely to engage in violent behavior. The findings give mental health professionals and others working with adults with mental illness a suite of characteristics they can use as potential warning signs, allowing them to intervene and hopefully prevent violent behavior.

Professor Helps N.C. County Interpret Connection to Underground Railroad

NC State University historian David Zonderman has spent the past three years helping Halifax County interpret its deep connection to the Underground Railroad. After performing humanities extension work with the local school system for more than a decade, Zonderman engaged with the Halifax County Convention and Visitors Bureau to develop a plan for conveying the county’s rich history to the public.

New research led by NC State's School of Public and International Affairs argues that increased military spending caused by economic sanctions counterbalances the adverse impact of the sanctions — and points to Iran as a case study in how this can happen.

Two Fulbright Faculty Land in Slovak Republic

Two Humanities and Social Sciences faculty members received Fulbright scholar awards to teach and study in Slovakia. Bob Kochersberger (English) is teaching journalism at the University of Constantine the Philosopher. Sixty miles away, Heidi Hobbs (Political Science) is at the University of Economics in Bratislava, developing curricula for a specialized certificate program and teaching a short course on American Society in Global Perspectives.

New Book Explores Political Philosopher’s ‘Original Position’
