Staff Celebrated, Thanked at Annual Event

The college held its annual Awards for Excellence luncheon April 19 to recognize and celebrate Humanities and Social Sciences staff. Seven staff members were nominated by their peers or supervisors for the college's 2016 Awards for Excellence. Nominations were based on achievement in outstanding service, innovation, public service, safety, heroism and human relations. During the luncheon, the college also recognized noted staff members who have reached milestone years in their careers with the state.

Upcoming: Pulitzer Poet Yusef Komunyakaa

Pulitzer Prize winning poet Yusef Komunyakaa served as this year’s judge for the NC State Poetry Contest. The contest — considered one of the largest free poetry contests in the southeast — yielded 636 entries this year. When Komunyakaa visits NC State on April 6-7, he will announce the contest winners, visit with students and hold a public reading of his own poetry.

Army Vet, LPS Student Lands Legislative Fellowship

After serving in the United States Army for eight years, Daniel Snedden trained his sights on completing his undergraduate degree. NC State's Leadership in the Public Sector program is enabling him to do just that. Through a legislative fellowship, Snedden is preparing and presenting a research paper to the entire North Carolina congressional delegation about the impact of budget sequestration on military readiness.

David Zonderman Named to Lead Department of History at NC State

Professor of History David A. Zonderman has been named head of the Department of History at NC State, effective immediately. Zonderman has been acting head since the untimely death of former head Jonathan Ocko in January 2015; he served as associate head from 2004 - 2015. Among his leadership roles within the college and across NC State, Zonderman was chair of the university’s faculty from 2013 – 2015 and served on the university’s budget restructuring task force from 2012 - 2015.

Adam Meade Named Head of Psychology Department at NC State

Psychology Professor Adam W. Meade has been named head of the Department of Psychology at NC State, effective July 1, 2016. He will step into the role held by Doug Gillan for the last ten years. Gillan is returning to the faculty.
