Associate professor of political science Michael Cobb knows how to find out what people really think. He's an expert in polling -- from creating the questionnaires, conducting the surveys and collecting the data to analyzing, interpreting and sharing the results. And he's preparing students to be proficient pollsters.

Mathews Medalist Promoted Sustainable Practices

Caroline Hansley received the Mathews Medal, given for outstanding leadership and service to a few select NC State seniors. Hansley channeled her passion for sustainability to create the Green Ambassadors program on campus. She majored in interdisciplinary studies with a concentration in agroecology and social entrepreneurship.

CHASS Staff Awards 2014

The college held its annual Awards of Excellence luncheon on April 29, 2014, to recognize and honor CHASS staff, whose efforts, competence, and enthusiasm keep the college humming. Latonya Tucker, executive assistant in the Department of History, and Claudia Kearney, a trainer in the Center for Family and Community Engagement, were this year's winners. Update June 18, 2014: Claudia Kearney of the Center for Family and Community Engagement was selected as one of five employees of North Carolina State University to represent the university at the state level Awards for Excellence.

Laken Geiger is a junior with a major in Communication and minor in Arts Entrepreneurship. She has had several media and arts-related internships, and spent Spring 2014 studying in Prague. She is a member of the Public Relations Student Society of America and Habitat for Humanity.

People Pay More Attention to the Upper Half of Field of Vision

A new study from NC State University and the University of Toronto finds that people pay more attention to the upper half of their field of vision. NC State psychology researcher Jing Feng, lead author of a paper on the work, says the finding could have ramifications for everything from traffic signs to software interface design.

The Trials of the Cherokee Were Reflected In Their Skulls

NC State forensic anthropologist Ann Ross and other researchers have found that environmental stressors – from the Trail of Tears to the Civil War – led to significant changes in the shape of skulls in the eastern and western bands of the Cherokee people. The findings highlight the role of environmental factors in shaping our physical characteristics.
