Study Highlights Local Voices on Tourism Development in Guatemala

Some cities surrounding Guatemala's Lake Atitlán have greatly benefitted from tourism. Other towns haven’t seen the same rate of development. NC State graduate student Adriana Szabo spent eight weeks studying the uneven trend in San Pedro La Laguna, a town on the shore of Lake Atitlán. Her research, rooted in an analysis of ethnographic research she collected during her trip, raises up the voices of locals who want to change the tourism development model.

Taking the Museum to the People

Public history graduate students Sarah Soleim and Abigail Jones have seen the challenge of attracting visitors to Raleigh's Pope House Museum firsthand. They worked at the house in the summer of 2015 during internships with the City of Raleigh Museum, the home’s current owner. As a way to increase public engagement, they worked with museum staff to brainstorm ways to bring the Pope House to the people.

Exploring the Evolution of Phishing

NC State doctoral student Olga Zielinska studies how phishing has evolved over time. Her current project, sponsored by the Science of Security Lablet at NC State, looks specifically at the various persuasive elements that hackers use to trick email filtering systems and users.

Staff Celebrated, Thanked at Annual Event

The college held its annual Awards for Excellence luncheon April 19 to recognize and celebrate Humanities and Social Sciences staff. Seven staff members were nominated by their peers or supervisors for the college's 2016 Awards for Excellence. Nominations were based on achievement in outstanding service, innovation, public service, safety, heroism and human relations. During the luncheon, the college also recognized noted staff members who have reached milestone years in their careers with the state.

Research Into Lean Stigma Gives Undergrad New Insights

Through undergraduate research, NC State communication major Lauren Ray is helping provide insight into how formerly overweight or obese individuals navigate those social barriers. Working as a research assistant with faculty mentor Dr. Lynsey Romo, Ray aided in a study examining the interpersonal challenges of lean stigma and the communicative strategies people use to manage those threats.

Volunteering to assist a doctoral student with environmental communication research, Malaviya helped study how mobile phone applications can help the public make sustainable choices.
