Members of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHASS) community received three of the five university awards presented to advisors for their exemplary work with students.
Stephanie Jares, Dana Kotter-Gruehn and Gene Melton are the CHASS advisors honored at the annual Undergraduate Academic Advising Awards ceremony in January.
These awards recognize “the accomplishments and commitment of those in academic advising who are exceptionally dedicated to helping undergraduate students succeed,” according to the university’s website.

Carrie McLean Award – Advising Administrator
The Carrie McLean Award is presented to the outstanding administrator responsible for an advising functional area. Nominees must have served as an administrator for at least three years. The award is named for Carrie McLean, the first director of advising at NC State.

Barbara Soloman Award – Primary Role Advisor
The Barbara Soloman Award is given to an advisor who dedicates at least 50 percent of their time to advising students directly and has five or more years of academic advising experience at NC State. The award honors Barbara Soloman, who embodied exceptional advising and advocacy for students.

Faculty Advisor Award
The Faculty Advisor Award honors an exceptional individual whose primary responsibilities lie in teaching and research and who dedicates less than 50 percent of their time to advising undergraduate students. This individual has advised undergraduates for more than three years.
Recipient: Gene Melton, senior lecturer and academic advisor of literature and film in the Department of English. For more information about Melton, visit his faculty page.
