College Honors Its Exceptional Faculty

Humanities and Social Sciences honored its top scholars, advisers and teachers on April 25 at the college’s annual faculty awards reception.

Faculty from across the college joined Dean Jeff Braden in recognizing their colleagues. Faculty members who received 2016-2017 college awards are:

  • David Berube, Professor of Communication and director of the Public Communication of Science and Technology Project, Outstanding Scholar
  • Katherine Mellen Charron, Associate Professor of History, Outstanding Undergraduate Professor  
  • Jing Feng, Assistant Professor of Psychology, Outstanding Junior Faculty
  • Alison Greene, Teaching Assistant Professor, Outstanding Adviser
  • Melissa Johnson, Professor of Communication, Outstanding Graduate Professor  
  • Jodi Khater, Senior Lecturer, Outstanding Lecturer
  • Trista Law, Academic Adviser, Outstanding Adviser

The college also noted a number of faculty who received university and system-wide recognition:

  • Chris Anson, University Distinguished Professor of English, Alumni Outstanding Teacher Award
  • Belle Boggs, Assistant Professor of English, Alumni Outstanding Teacher Award
  • Craig Brookins, Associate Professor of Psychology and program director of the interdisciplinary Africana Studies program, NC State Outreach and Engagement Faculty Fellow
  • Sarah Bowen, Associate Professor of Sociology, University Faculty Scholar
  • John W. Carroll, professor of philosophy, nominee, Board of Governors Outstanding Teaching Award.
  • Sarah Desmarais, Associate Professor of Psychology, Research Leadership Academy and Alumni Association Outstanding Research Award
  • Lori Foster, Professor of Psychology, nominee, O. Max Gardner Award
  • Mary Haskett, Professor of Psychology, Alexander Quarles Holladay Medal for Excellence
  • James Kiwanuka-Tondo, Associate Professor of Communication, Jackson Rigney International Service Award
  • Steve McDonald, Associate Professor of Sociology, University Faculty Scholar
  • Anne McLaughlin, Associate Professor of Psychology, University Faculty Scholar
  • Jason Miller, Professor of English, Alumni Outstanding Teacher Award
  • Thomas Parker, Professor of History, Research Leadership Academy and Alumni Association Outstanding Research Award
  • Tim Wallace, Associate Professor of Anthropology, NC State Outstanding Global Engagement Award
  • Walt Wolfram, nominee (results not known at this writing), James E. Holshouser Jr. Award for Excellence in Public Service

Faculty who have received prestigious awards from scholarly organizations include:

  • David Gilmartin, Distinguished Professor of History, will be a Fellow at the National Humanities Center next year.
  • Heidi Hobbs, Associate Professor and director of the Master’s of International Studies program, will be a Fulbright Scholar in the Czech Republic next year.
  • Jennifer Kuzma, Goodnight-North Carolina GlaxoSmithKline Foundation Distinguished Professor in the School of Public and International Affairs, will be the Fulbright Canada Research Chair in Policy Sciences at the University of Ottawa’s Institute for Society and Science Policy. Jennifer is co-director of NC State’s Center for Genetic Engineering and Society.
  • Mark Nance, Associate Professor of Political Science, will be a Fulbright Scholar in Sweden next year.
