Lavery is a Graduate student in MGIS&T program in the college of natural resources. He works for the Center for Family and Community Engagement as a policy analyst in the NC State Addictions Specialist Certificate Program. He graduate from Appalachian State University with a degree in Sustainable development and a concentration of agriculture.
