NC State University will recognize the Class of 2025 during the Fall University Commencement Ceremony on December 13, 2025, at the Lenovo Center. Among those graduating is 19-year-old psychology major Urwa Rashid, who was selected as the Student Speaker for the upcoming ceremony.

Urwa’s academic journey started well ahead of schedule. She graduated from high school at the age of 13 and began college the following year. Originally from New York, she began her studies at the University at Albany. After her family relocated to North Carolina, she continued her studies at Wake Tech Community College before transferring to NC State University in 2024.

Urwa knew her path looked different from the average college student, but she made the most of her experience. While at NC State, she chose to study psychology on a pre-medical track with the goal of attending medical school and becoming a physician.

Due to her young age, she lived at home and relied heavily on her family for transportation. Even so, she built strong friendships, got involved on campus and participated in university traditions such as the Krispy Kreme Challenge. Guided by an outgoing determination that reflected a notable maturity, Urwa navigated uncertainty with confidence, leaving many classmates surprised when they learned her true age.

Urwa emphasized that her family played a major role in her success. Her uncle, father, and high school principal advocated for her as she advanced through school early, while her mother encouraged Urwa to pursue educational opportunities she herself never had. Urwa’s inspiration did not stop there. Her older sister Yusra graduated young as well and provided Urwa with much advice and reassurance.

When she arrived in Raleigh, Urwa said NC State stood out immediately. She said the university’s “Think and Do” motto resonated with her from the start and is something she plans to carry with her after graduation.

I noticed NC State everywhere in the city. It felt like the university was woven into the community, and it made me feel like it was the right place to grow.

Looking back, Urwa said she would tell her 14-year-old self to trust her instincts. She noted that staying confident in her decisions made a meaningful difference throughout her college experience.

While she is keeping most of her University Commencement remarks a surprise, Urwa shared that her message will focus on approaching uncertainty with purpose and finding ways to make a positive impact in the world and within local communities.
