Op Ed: Restricting What Recipients of SNAP Benefits Eat Won’t Fix Nutritional Issues

In an op-ed published in The Hill, NC State Associate Professors of Sociology Sarah Bowen and Sinikka Elliott bring their research to bear on a public hearing held by the House Committee on Agriculture on the pros and cons of restricting how food stamps can be used. The sociologists say talk of restricting what poor people eat ignores the heart of the problem: that many poor families are struggling and have inadequate resources and support. Bowen and Elliott co-direct Voices into Action: The Families, Food and Health Project.
