New Students
We are proud to count you among our 5,000 undergraduate and graduate CHASS students. Pat yourself on the back for getting in: CHASS is a competitive college. This year, more than 3,000 students applied; we started the year with just 500 new freshmen and transfer students.
Now that you’re here, we want to let you in on a few things. Here they are … (drum roll) ...
The Secrets to CHASS Success
Jump in with both feet.
- Come to new student orientation. It’s mandatory. More importantly, it’s a blast. (Oh, and tell your folks they need to register too: Parents’ Orientation)
- Read the book. Every summer, we read the selected Common Reading. When you get here in the fall, we’ll meet in small groups to discuss it – and eat NC State ice cream.
- Consider First Year Inquiry.
Go to class.
- Duh. But seriously.
Speak up. Ask questions. Get help.
- There’s an adviser in your home department who can help you navigate your way.
- Stop by the Academic Support Center. Just walk up to our Caldwell Lounge booths to ask your questions related to academics. Or contact chassacademicsupport@ncsu.edu. Experts are standing by 8:00 – 5:00, Mon – Fri.
- Need tutoring? A co-op placement? Info about pre-law? We call it DUAP. You’ll call it helpful.
- Questions about financial aid and scholarships? Contact Dara_Leeder@ncsu.edu.
Get involved.
- Choosing’s the only hard part. You have CHASS clubs. You have student ambassadors. You have access to so many ways to serve, lead, play, work, laugh, and learn.
Work hard.
- Sometimes it’s rewarded. You could be Student of the Month. You could earn a merit scholarship. Or join the University Honors Program.
- Sometimes hard work has no tangible rewards. But it’s still seriously satisfying.
Follow the rules.
- There’s just no getting around certain policies and procedures.
Have fun.
- Scan your weekly Upcoming in CHASS emails. They’ll keep you in the loop.
- Trade places: You could be CHASS Dean for a Day.
- Complete the list of 54 Things to Do at NC State. And yes, that includes running the Krispy Kreme Challenge.
Practice gratitude.
- If a professor changed your world, thank her.
- If an advisor helped you out, nominate him.
- If a parental unit, a mentor, or some earlier teacher helped get you here, let them know how you're doing. It will totally make their day. And yours.
