Vienna - Dr. Lutz Kube

Bio from Dr. Lutz Kube

I am Dr. Lutz Kube and I have a masters in German from Humboldt University in Berlin and a Ph.D. in German from UNC Chapel Hill. I have been at NC State University since 1999 where I am teaching, at the rank of Teaching Assistant Professor, courses at all levels of German language instruction as well as courses on German film and German history and civilization.

I have been directing the Vienna Summer Program in its current format every summer since 2006. One foundation for the success of the program is the wonderful working relationship with a Viennese German language school, IKI. They not only provide excellent German language instruction by highly qualified teachers, but also organize the housing for our students and provide cultural experiences like learning how to prepare some of the local food specialties.

A very important part of the Vienna Program is ARS 252, Arts in Vienna in 1900, where the students get insights into the culture of a German speaking country. I teach parts of the class that relate to my own expertise like literature and civilization. Guest lecturers with Ph.D.s in their field provide lectures and excursions in the field of music and the fine arts.

The Vienna Summer program provides a perfect combination of German language instruction and cultural studies that could not be replicated in a classroom at NC State.
